Le Dome Café in
Montparnasse, Paris, is renowned for its seafood. Opening in 1898 it was one of
the first restaurants in the area, and continues today with traditional food
and décor, but also additional specialties.
I have been before,
and this time the menu was even better. I started with a sliver of salmon and
warm oysters with port wine.
My main meal was scallops with chestnut squash and
Espelette chili pepper.
And lastly I had raspberries and coffee.
The chili pepper is
grown in the French town of Espelette in southwest France on the Spanish border.
The plant was introduced to the region from South America in the 16th
century, and is an everyday ingredient of Basque cuisine. Espelette has held an
annual pepper festival each October since 1968, which is a popular tourist
attraction. The pepper is quite mild, but with a distinctive taste.
