The
Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery in Tbilisi, Georgia, is holding an exhibition dedicated
to the 100 year anniversary of Robert Sturua, from 4 May to 2 June 2017.
Robert Sturua (1916-198?)
is the father of Robert Sturua (1938-) a prominent Georgian theatre director,
noted for his productions of Shakespeare’s plays (Hamlet and King Lear) as well
as Waiting for Godot.
Robert Sturua the father
and painter was born on 4 May 1916. He studied at the Tbilisi State Academy of
Arts, and from 1939-1941 he studied at the Russian Academy of Arts in Moscow.
He graduated from the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1942. As a painter and
muralist, he held the Award of the Public Artist of Georgia in 1965.
Sturua is noted for
his monumental paintings and murals in the theatres of Georgia. His works
include ‘Celebration of the Victory’ painted in the Chiatura Akaki Tsereteli
State Professional Drama Theatre (1945-50, USSR state prize winner, 1951);
‘Friendship of Nations’ painted in the Shroma (Ozurgeti District) Culture House
(1953-56); ‘Good Defeats Evil’ at the Culture House of Miners in Tkibuli
(1957-60); and a large panoramic mural (1966) of ‘Shota and Tamar’ dedicated to
the 800th jubilee anniversary of the Georgian poet Shota Rustaveli
and the female King Tamar.
The exhibition showcases
Sturea’s paintings, from portraits to landscapes, and to regional theatre murals.
Sturua also created illustrations for the works of Ilia Chavchavadze and Vazha
Pshavela.
The exhibition is
supported by Shota Rustaveli State Drama Theatre and The Ministry of Culture
and Monument Protection of Georgia.
