May is the month of the Atlas. The first modern Atlas was published on 22
May 1570 – its 447th anniversary.
Flemish cartographer, Abraham Ortelius, from The Netherlands, created the
first Atlas of the World, called Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theatre of the
World). Ortelius (1527-1598) had published a map of the world in 1564 and
decided to collate this with other maps from European cartographers
(map-makers).
