In an evocative
display, Georgian artist, Vakho Bugadze opens his personal exhibition to the
public at The National Gallery in Tbilisi from 10 September to 9 October 2015.
The Georgian National
Museum Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery – referred to as the National
Gallery – exhibits Bugadze’s first solo exhibition, called ‘Suburbs.’ There are
73 paintings, all produced from 2013 to 2015.
The artworks deploy
mixed methods, such as texture, watercolour, pigment, and oil. The series
‘Suburb’ are all connected to childhood memories and fantasies. The contour of
a grey several-storied building appears in nearly every canvas. Overlaid in
each is an image that evokes memories and fantasies from childhood – such as
dogs, people, shadows.
Titles include: From
the Family Album, Chinese Curtain, A Building, The Shadow on the Building, The
Photo of Tourist, Seashore, Aleppo,
Street Dogs, The Wedding, and Kabuki House Castle.
‘These are my
childhood memories … I used to live near ‘closed market’ in my childhood. Then
we moved to Gldani. The construction of the suburb just started, and there were
standing a few buildings.’
The style of Bugadze’s
works are ‘on the edge of abstraction.’
