The Tbilisi Zoo – reopened on September 14, three months after the floods
of June 13 – has a surviving Western roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), often called a European roe deer, in an
enclosure on higher ground. It is male with a grey coat and short antlers. It
is very common throughout Europe, from the Mediterranean to the Caucasus.
It is not as large as the Siberian roe deer, although they share the same territory
in the Caucasus Mountains. After the flood, the surviving animals were moved
uphill and are sharing accommodation with similar animals. However, the Western
roe deer is in an enclosure by itself because other livestock make the grass
unclean, and the roe deer likes moist, tender grass.
