Heroes Square is a
roundabout. It was established in the 19th century as a place to remember
Soviet heroes. An overpass was constructed in the 1970s to connect the growing
capital of Tbilisi. The road was further developed and expanded from 2006-2012,
leaving a void in the middle of the highway.
The Heroes Memorial
was constructed on Heroes Square in 2009 to remember the Georgian heroes. It is
51 metres high with 16 segments lined with marble. The names of about 4,000 heroes
from 1921, 1924, 1992-1993, and 2008 are engraved on the marble tiles.
