Every time I walk past an old building in the heart of Tbilisi, Georgia, I
take a photograph of the strong men. They hold up the building – it is an old
Soviet-style building that looks like it will collapse soon.
There are four strong men of Georgia holding up the building. The statues
are of Atlas, the Greek mythological titan who held up the sky. Atlas is also
the titan of astronomy and navigation - two of my favourite subjects.
The origins of Atlas are from the Atlas Mountains in northwest Africa –
specifically Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. But of course, I refer to the men
as the ‘strong men of Georgia’ because they are right in Tbilisi. I just adore
them.
