The work of Georgian
artist, Amiran Kuprava, showcases the diversity of his paintings from 2007, and from 2013-2015, in 'Metamorphoses.'
About 70 paintings and
30 small-scale sculptures use different techniques such as oil on canvas, oil
on cardboard, oil on net, acrylic on net, oil on oilcloth, wood sculptures, and
installations. They are minimalist, monochrome or duochrome, stylized pieces, and
predominantly portraits.
Kuprava was based in
Berlin, Germany, for ten years from 1993 to 2013, where his work was displayed
in solo and group exhibitions. Since returning to Tbilisi, Georgia, two years
ago, this is his largest solo exhibition.
His works from 2007 are predominantly oil on canvas (photographs shown), such as 'Sophie' (below), 'Wolf Rider' (below), 'Medea' and 'Red.' In 2013 Kuprava continued with oil on canvas or oil on veneer, with works such as 'Marquee Women' - 'Portrait on Diagonal' - 'Infanta' - 'Gaze' and 'Portrait on Light Blue Background.' In 2014 he changed to oil on net, and acrylic on net, which show a soft, subtle interpretation of his portraits, such as ''Rene's Mood' - 'Woman Sphinx' - 'Surprise' - 'Strange Bird' and 'Irao.' From 2015 he diversifies his style in a variety of media, such as 'Bacchus' (veneer), 'Horizontal Portrait' (oil on canvas), 'Black Sea - Wolf' (oil on net), 'Strange Man' (oil on cardboard), and 'Do Not Die Or You Will Be Buried' (cloth).
The Shalva
Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, part of the Georgian National Museum network
is hosting the solo exhibition of Amiran Kuprava’s works from October 6-27,
2015.
