Cafe le Toit means The
Roof Cafe. It is a small cafe in Tbilisi’s Old City where it feels as if you
are stepping back in time.
Up the staircase,
there is one main room and a long thin balcony. It is reminiscent of the room
of the former residence of Georgian poet, Aleksandre Chavchavadze, in
Tsandandali in the east of the country – but without the grandeur (he was the
godson of Catherine II of Russia). The
poet’s Georgian-European house had wide verandahs and balconies. However, the
cafe does have high ceilings. The balcony has a view across the river to the
President’s Palace.
Chavchavadze’s house was
decorated with Georgian, French, and Russian furniture. The Cafe le Toit has an
odd and quaint collection of French
furniture as well as crockery, paintings, and bric-a-brac around the room. The
wallpaper is classic Romantic period, with roses, throughout. There are tables
as well as sofas for casual seating.
