How many
elderly people across Europe use the internet, and what for? And in which
countries do the elderly use the internet more often? A study of 65-74 year
olds reveal some answers to where are the most internet users aged 65-74 across Europe.

studied the internet use of people aged between 65 years and 74 years in
European Union Member States in 2014 (October 5, 2015).
In 2014 42% of 65-74
year olds used the internet. The countries with the most elderly users include:
Denmark (84%), Luxembourg (81%), Sweden (78%), the Netherlands (76%), United
Kingdom (70%), and Finland (68%). The countries where elderly people used the
internet the least include: Romania (10%), Bulgaria (10%), Greece (14%), Cyprus
(16%), and Croatia (17%).
Internet users in
Europe aged 65-74 years mainly used the internet for emailing (86%), finding
information about goods and services (79%), reading the news (60%), and buying
goods (42%). Reading the news online was the highest in the Baltic States –
Lithuania (93%), Latvia (84%), and Estonia (83%), but it was also high in
Greece (87%), Poland (74%), Croatia (73%), and Bulgaria (67%).
In 2014 in Europe 23%
of elderly internet users participated in social networks. The highest users
were from Hungary (51%), Portugal (44%), Malta (43%), Sweden (43%), and Latvia
(41%). The lowest users of social networks were from Germany (11%), Czech
Republic (15%), France (17%), and Lithuania (18%).
