Danish company, Lego –
the world’s largest toymaker – may not be able to keep up with demand this
festive season (December to January), particularly in Europe, and specifically new orders. The reason
is because the demand has exceeded their expectations (Canberra Times, 22 October 2015).
After The Lego Movie in 2014 sales
grew by 18% in the first half of this year. To meet demand the family-owned
company has stepped up production to ‘full speed’ to make the plastic building
bricks and other Lego toys. They have also invested in plants and equipment to
make more toys – they have plants in Denmark, Hungary, Czech Republic, and
Mexico. A new factory is under construction in Jiaxing, China, which is
expected to be completed in 2017, and the Mexico factory is adding another
3,000 workers in an expansion to 2022.
The Lego spokesperson,
Mr. Roar Trangbaek, said all factories are at maximum capacity and will do
everything they can to meet demand.
