Tbilisi
Zoo was almost completely destroyed in the flooding of June 13, 2015.
Construction is underway to re-house surviving and donated animals. Animals
from the river-side enclosures on the lower levels of the zoo are now sharing
accommodation with animals on higher ground (almost all of them survived the floods).
Dutch
landscape designer and biologist, Erik van Vliet, was in Tbilisi, Georgia,
until today (October 14), to assist the rehabilitation of Tbilisi Zoo. Van
Vliet is preparing draft designs for modern open-air enclosures to accommodate
the relocated animals.
Van
Vliet is working pro bono in
collaboration with zoo staff. He has 21 years experience designing zoos in The
Netherlands, such as the DierenPark Amersfoort, Safaripark Beekse Bergen,
Avifauna Birdpark, Dierenrijk, Zodiac Zoos, and Gaiapark Kerkrade Zoo. Other
zoos include the Antwerp Zoo and Planckendael in Belgium, Allwetterzoo Munster
and Zoo Magdeburg in Germany, Knowsley Safari Park in the United Kingdom, and
the Zoological Centre Ramat Gan in Israel.
